Nourishment required for soil 5 Sep 2007
Our food could be up to 70 per cent less nutritious than it was 70 years ago according to a visiting US biological farming consultant, Arden Andersen. This could be reversed by switching to biological farming practices and ensuring that our soil is more nutritious. Dr Andersen said that a change in soil management could solve issues such as weeds, diseases, insects, water-holding capacity, erosion, compaction and carbon sequestration. "We simply need to embrace solutions, as opposed to keeping the status quo," he said. Dr Andersen said that nutrition had been reduced by between 38 and 70 per cent for our whole range of foods since the 1940's.
