Pears go high-tech 12 Sep 2007
Scientists in New Zealand have developed technology to monitor the gases emitted by pears which indicate the fruit's ripeness. As the gases change a sensor changes colour which shows the degree of ripeness, from crisp to juicy. The sensor is included in packaging for the fruit and takes into account factors including the pear's variety, its geographic region, the growing season, when it was picked, the storage conditions and the type of packaging used. A similar sensor is under development for avocados.
