Government stoush as water dries up 21 Sep 2007
Water storage in the Murray Darling basin system was only 1,500 gigalitres in August, less than half the volume at this time last year. Prime Minister John Howard has accused the Victorian government of selfish state parochialism for rejecting a proposal that would further cut water allocations for Victorian irrigators in case South Australia needs it next year. Mr Howard said "This is an occasion for total co-operation and we are dealing here with a genuine crisis". The Victorian Premier John Brumby responded by accusing the Mr Howard of "using water as a political football". The state's Water Minister Tim Holding said "Water allocations are currently only 10 per cent for Victorian irrigators along the Murray River, so this is not the time to set aside water for another state to be held in reserve in case it is needed next year".
