Drought may run for many more years
11 Oct 2007

South Australian Greens senator Rachel Siewert has warned that the current drought could go on until 2014. Based on historical data, and without factoring in any effect of climate change, Senator Siewert said that there could be another six years of low rainfall. "Factoring in climate change makes this scenario even bleaker," said Senator Siewert. "Our failure to deal with over-allocation and manage the system based on the risks of historic drought means that we have sacrificed the environment and agriculture." The senator said that, while agriculture is not to blame for the current water problems, further plantings along the Murray should be delayed until the drought was over and effective water management systems were in place.
