First water initiatives announced 15 Oct 2007
Although it has not yet gained the support of the state premiers the federal government has announced the first water-saving measures under its $10 billion Murray-Darling rescue plan. As the government has ruled out compulsory buybacks, Friday's announcement was for grants of up to $500,000 for private irrigation companies to come up with ways to improve systems and save at leat 25 megalitres per water entitlement. Funding for two such plans were also announced, one for the Trangie-Nevertire scheme in NSW's Macquarie Valley which could save 35 per cent of entitlements, and the other to modernise Murray Irrigation Limited which is estimated to save 50,000 megalitres. A further $3.3 billion from the fund was pledged for permanently disconnecting the Yacto Lagoon in South Australia and reducing evaporation which would save up to 2.5 gigalitres over three years.
