Water plan under fire
23 Oct 2007

Hundreds of irrigators rallied at Parliament House in Canberra yesterday to express their anger at the government and warn that prices for food will only rise further if water allocation problems are not resolved. Irrigators want a weir to be constructed at Wellington in South Australia which could save one million megalitres of water per year and have asked the government to create a Basin crisis management team to identify emergency water supply options. The first review of the National Water Initiative was also released yesterday which found that better science was needed to support water plans and that all options should be considered for maintaining urban water supplies.
