Fury over 16 per cent water allocations
31 Oct 2007

The South Australian government has frozen water allocations prompting growers along the Murray to warn that the Riverland will turn into a "dustbowl". Irrigator allocations have been locked at 16 per cent as the state enters its traditionally dry summer and water has already been turned off for 12 per cent of the area's citrus trees. The Fresh Fruit Association's chairman, Dino Ceracchi said that growers barely made it through last year on 60 per cent allocations and cutting that to 16 per cent would see 30 per cent of jobs gone with a year. "We're not going to wait until all our towns are dead before we act. Things are going to heat up and emotions are going to come out. Watch out anyone in power because there’s going to be some surprises," he said.
