Drought just an "excuse" for price rises 1 Nov 2007
With data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showing that the cost of fresh fruit and vegetables had increased more than processed meats, alcohol and butter, the South Australian Farmers Federation has accused retailers of using the drought as an excuse to increase prices. The SAFF's president, Wayne Cornish, said that the price hikes were "opportunism at its worst". "The growers would get some marginal increases but to imagine that farm-gate prices have gone up by those sorts of margins is just absurd," he said. A spokesman for Coles denied the accusations saying that prices to farmers had increased where higher production costs were being experienced.
