Water turns into gold
5 Nov 2007

Water is now more valuable than land and many farmers are selling their allocations to stay afloat. Two years ago a temporary water licence, which lasts for one year, could be bought for $45 per megalitre, but this is now worth up to $1,100. Orange, asparagus and grape grower from Wellington, Geoff Rix, had planned to sell up his farm earlier this year but the prices for his water entitlements has given some short-term relief. "It has given many of us hope but, like anything, it's a dicey game and if we get rain, which is what we want, no one will want to buy licences," he said. "So you are damned if you do and damned if you don't."
