SA wants cheap loans for water
15 Nov 2007

South Australian Premier Mike Rann has hit out at the federal government for not yet spending any of the $10 billion National Water Security Plan funds to help desperate irrigators. Mr Rann is urging the government to act on a proposal to provide subsidised loans to irrigators with perennial crops so that they can buy water to keep their grape, citrus, stone fruit and almond plants alive. "I understand that water is available from irrigators with annual crops who do not intend to plant this year and who are willing sellers," he said. SA irrigators were told yesterday that they will be able to use 22 per cent of their water allocation from next month, up from 16 per cent, however this will still not be sufficient to keep permanent plantings alive.
