Macadamia values fall but property prices hold
3 Dec 2007

Australia produces around 45 per cent of the world's macadamia nuts. The Australian Macadamia Society estimates that there are around 200,000 trees being planted every year in an industry which has been expanding by 10 per cent every year for the past decade. Last year processors bid up the price of nuts to a high of $3.40a kilogram but, after discovering that international markets would not pay that much, were left with a glut which has seen the price fall to $1.50. However the oversupply has not produced a fall in land prices as plantations are usually on good land with high rainfall, and generally in areas where people want to retire about 20km from the coast.
