Murray-Darling growers need help to survive
5 Dec 2007

While conditions have improved for grain farmers, horticulturalists in the Murray-Darling continue to struggle with irrigation restrictions, hot weather and a lack of rain. The Murray Darling Association has called on both state and federal governments to provide assistance through subsidies and cheap, non-asset-tested loans. A survey by the South Australian Citrus Industry Development Board has predicted that there will be a 30 to 40 per cent drop in the crop next year and that 16 per cent of plantings are being taken out of production, either permanently or temporarily.
