Rain falls but Murray-Darling basin empty
11 Dec 2007

While much of the east coast has been receiving good rainfalls and the Bureau of Meteorology has predicted a 60 to 70 per cent chance of high rainfall throughout summer, irrigators in the Murray-Darling basin have been warned that they may not receive any water allocation next year. In its latest update the Murray-Darling Basin Commission has said that the two years to November saw the lowest levels of flows into the system ever recorded. This, combined with temperatures in the south of the basin that are up to six degrees hotter than average, has reduced total water storage to about 550 gigalitres lower than it was at this time last year.
