Fruit flies appear in Ceduna
21 Dec 2007

Ceduna has been hit by an outbreak of fruit fly, the first in South Australia this season, and will cost around $100,000 to eradicate. While there is a fruit-fly roadblock at Ceduna it is believed that the flies must have come from someone illegally transporting fruit. There has only been one other fruit fly outbreak in South Australia in the last three years and officials have warned that if it becomes established in the state it will jeopardise markets for horticultural industries. The Department of Primary Industries and Resources has commenced organic bait-spotting and will release sterile flies in an attempt to eradicate the pest.
