Murray flows improved but still not enough 2 Jan 2008
While still well below the long term average for December of 450 to 500 gigalitres, flows into the Murray River last month are estimated at 220 gigalitres are good news compared with the 34 gl reported for December 2006. Chief executive of the Murray-Darling Basin Commission Wendy Craik said yesterday that while recent rains were welcome it was possible that irrigators in the south of the basin would again receive none of their water entitlements in the new irrigation year which starts in June. Dr Craik said that it would be great to reach average inflow levels but that what was really needed was an absolute bucketing and above average falls. The Bureaus of meteorology has put the probability of above average falls across the north and north-east of the basin over the next three months at 70 to 75 per cent, but further south it is only 50-50.
