Second bite of the cherry for growers 5 Mar 2008
A fruit fly ban has been lifted which will allow mainland growers to export cherries to the United States. Previously only Tasmania was permitted to export cherries to the US as it was certified as fruit fly free. The lifting of the ban was welcomed by Agriculture Minister Tony Burke who acknowledged the hard work that the local horticulture had put into helping the government gain market access. In 2006-07 Tasmania exported $320,000 worth of cherries to the US while total exports of the fruit from Australian were 1250 tonnes worth $12.3 million.
