Beekeeping a dying industry 12 Mar 2008
Beekeepers are concerned that there are no young people entering an industry where 80 per cent are over the age of 60. Mornington beekeeper and pollinator John Winkels says that as there are no schools or effective training the industry is in danger and horticulture needs to help out. "Horticulture in 10 years will get a wake-up call when there's hardly anyone left...there's no crops without bees," he said. Pollination by bees greatly increases the yield and quality of crops, fruit and vegetables. Mr Winkels holds open days at his property to try to attract more people to take up beekeeping.
