Warning on health fund premium increases
10 Jan 2002

Labor and health consumer groups yesterday warned the Federal Government not to approve any increases in private health insurance premiums without careful investigation. At least three of the Australia's largest private health insurers are currently seeking permission to increase premiums.

Labor health spokesman, Mr Stephen Smith, said the Government should only approve increases in premiums which are "absolutely necessary", noting that industry profits have more than doubled to $795 million since the introduction of the 30 per cent rebate.

'Labor fires warning shot on health fund premium rises', The Australian Financial Review, 10/01/02, p6.
