Report dispels concerns for farm chemicals
27 May 2002

A new report has found that pesticides are involved in very few of workers’ compensation claims and that chemical residues pose no risks to humans. The report, prepared by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, stated that only 0.4 per cent of workers’ compensation claims involved pesticides. The Technical Director of the Academy, Professor Ian Rae, said the very low incidence of workers’ compensation claims involving pesticides would help dispel community concerns about chemical use in agriculture.

Professor Rae said that pesticides are vital to modern agriculture but that ways have to be found to improve consumer confidence. One of the confidence-building measures recommended by the Academy was the establishment of a national database on pesticide use, including adverse reactions to people or the environment from pesticide use.
