Farmers work to rebuild sheep flock 23 Jun 2003
A national campaign has started to rebuild Australia's flock, which has slipped to its lowest level in 50 years due to the drought. The total flock will drop below 100 million for the first time since World War II.
Lamb production this year is expected to be 16.2 million, down 12 per cent from 18.4 million produced in 2000.
Meat and Livestock Australia, the Sheepmeat Council and the Australian Meat Council have joined together to encourage farmers to get back into sheep and lambs.
MLA's managing director Mark Spurr said although the drought hasn't yet broken and many farmers are facing hard times, it's opportune to start focusing on future production. Prices for sheep and lamb meat are likely to be strong until 2007 due to the drought's impact on the national flock. To take advantage of that, farmers have to start thinking now by building up their flocks.
To help farmers, the MLA will offer national forums to explain methods such as grain and pasture management that can be used to boost lamb production.
