Chinese meat market opens 27 Jun 2003
After many years of effort, Australian meat produces have at last gained entry to the Chinese market. Local producers of beef, sheep and goat meat have won an agreement with the Chinese Government that allows them unrestricted access to the nation's meat market.
Australia exported 22,000 tonnes of beef, mutton, lamb and other meat to China worth $69 million last year, under restrictions, out of total meat exports worth more than $6 billion. Previously, Australia could only export cooked and processed meat, products for re-export, and meat for use by deluxe hotels and diplomats.
Meat and Livestock Australia's Mike Hayward said the agreement is significant as it allows Australian producers much easier access across the board. But he warned that China is a difficult market and is itself a big meat producer. Australian exporters will need to be very price-competitive, he stated.
