Farmers plead for dog baits
7 Jul 2003

The Victorian Farmers' Federation has called for the aerial dropping of poisoned meat to kill wild dogs which have been attacking the state's sheep flocks, particularly in the north-east. VFF Paul Weller said the financial losses from wild dog attacks are unsustainable. He said there's a pressing need for aerial baiting as it has proved to be the best method of controlling wild dogs.

Mr Weller stated that wild dog attacks have driven a number of sheep farmers to switch to cattle, as they're less likely to fall victim to feral dogs.

Victoria's Environment Minister, John Thwaites, said the Government was considering baiting as one control measure but stated also "there's no quick fix".

Herald Sun, 5/7/03, page 18.
