Lamb incomes chopped 11 Jul 2003
The annual incomes of prime lamb farmers have been cut by almost 50 per cent over the past financial year, according to the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics.
ABARE said the surge in incomes from 1999 for prime lamb farmers had stalled due to the drought. Between 1999-2000 and 2001-2002, the average income for prime lamb farmers increased to a record $81,500 from $26,000. But last financial year the drought slashed incomes to $41,000.
ABARE director Brian Fisher said farmers have been unable to meet demand because of the drought.
Almost 20,000 farms in Australia are considered to be prime lamb specialists.
