Piggery protest heads for Sydney
21 Jul 2003

The Ballarat Organisation for Animal Rights (BOAR) will drive to Sydney in a "pigmobile", where they will join Animal Liberation NSW members for a protest on July 22 at 10.30am on the steps of Sydney's parliament house.

The protesters want the Federal Government to ban sow stalls, as has already occurred in the European Union, New Zealand and Florida. They hope to influence a government review of the code of practice for pig farming. The BOAR group wants to draw attention to what they claim are appalling conditions that sows are forced to endure in cramped spaces.

Sows have skin, respiratory, heart and behavioural problems, BOAR claims. It's estimated that 60 per cent of Australia's commercial pigs are housed in such conditions, the group says.
