Stock feed industry adopts QA scheme 31 Jul 2003
Demand for animal protein globally is expected to triple by 2030, driving demand in the animal feed industry. Stock Feed Manufacturers' Association of Australia's John Spragg said the driving factor will be increased purchasing power associated with higher standards of living in developing countries. He says by 2020, 928mt of cereals will be used globally in the animal feed industry.
Australia's annual production of 10mt amounts to 1.6 per cent of the global animal feed industry. Raw materials used in Australia include 76 per cent grain, 12 per cent oilseed meals, 5 per cent pulses and 7 per cent by-products.
Mr Spragg says Australia has a good reputation in an industry that's been plagued by food scares. The Australian stockfeeds industry launched FeedSafe in March this year. The association has applied a code of Good Manufacturing Practice, with audits to be conducted by a third party. Compulsory compliance is seen as essential and all members will comply by September 2004.
The industry now needs to be able to identify the source of every tonne of grain used. Mr Spragg said the use of GM canola meal that wasn't segregated from non-GM product will create difficulties for stock feed manufacturers.
