Wild dogs wanted: $20 bounty 8 Aug 2003
A bounty system on wild dogs will be trialled in WA's Laverton Shire in a bid to tackle the problem. WA Agriculture Minister Kim Chance has approved the trial, as well as aerial baiting and increased ground trapping and baiting. The bounty will be set at $20 per dog.
Laverton Shire president Murray Thomas welcomed the moves, as wild dogs are a particular problem on the vast tracts of unallocated crown land around Laverton.
Mr Chance said that while bounties are not a long-term solution, experience shows they are effective in the short term if used in conjunction with other measures. They are ineffective for widespread control and can be costly to administer, and also encourage use of techniques that yield carcasses and can encourage fraud and the trafficking of scalps from other areas.
Mr Chance said there would be strict controls on payment: the payee must be a property owner, manager or nominee; the property must be in the shire of Laverton and running sheep or goats, or adjacent to a similar operation; the property must also undertake aerial baiting and ground baiting.
The trial will run from August 16, 2003 to March 31, 2004.
