Record year on live ex front
8 Aug 2003

The live export sector had a record-breaking year during fiscal 2002-2003, with one million head - breaking the former record set in 1996-1997 by 110,000 head. However, the latest year's figures are well up on previous years in terms of value: $607 million, which is 8 per cent up on 2001-2002.

Demand was strong from Indonesia, with Meat and Livestock Australia reporting a 50 per cent increase to just under 490,000 head.

However, exports to Egypt fell 30 per cent in 2002/2003 to 105,000 head, due to competition from Ireland and South America, and the government's move to float the currency.

Exports to the Philippines increased by 12 per cent to 108,000 head. Saudi Arabia took 52,800 head; Brunei took 23,400; Japan 18,500; and Jordan 10,300.

North Queensland Register, 7/8/03.
