Mutton, lamb set saleyard records 12 Aug 2003
Record saleyard prices for lambs have resulted in some Brisbane supermarkets charging up to $16 a kilogram for loin chops and over $30 for cutlets. But yard prices of $112 for crossbred lambs and more than $65 for aged wethers are good news for growers.
A Goondiwindi district sheep grower, Robert Sylvester, who runs 8000 head on his property Undabri, said he was about to consign Merino wether lambs for sale at Warwick on the southern Darling Downs. He's hoping for $70 or better. A year ago I would have thought $60 was good, but not long ago I would have been flat out getting $30, he said.
AgForce says decreasing numbers of sheep and lambs is having an impact on prices. The short supply was caused by the drought, exacerbated by overseas marketing campaigns which have created strong demand for Australian sheep meats.
A Primac Elders spokesman said interstate buyers are also coming to Queensland looking for sheep to re-stock properties, especially in the NSW Riverina area.
