Agbiotech's 'gene genies' compare notes
22 Aug 2003

Some of Australia's leading experts in livestock genetics have come together to discuss the latest research into how livestock yields can be improved through selective breeding and superior nutrition, at the AusBiotech 2003 National Conference and Business Partnering and Investment Forum in Adelaide. Sponsored by Meat and Livestock Australia, the agenda features presentations on four case studies highlighting the capacity for investment in innovative research to enhance the industries' future in Australasia.

MLA said given our proximity to the growing Asian markets the red meat industry has enormous growth potential, however Australia will need technological innovations to stay ahead of competitors in providing quality assured products. The biotechnology sector is an important driving force in that area.

Two of CSIRO Livestock Industries' collaborative research successes - the isolation of gene markers for beef marbling, and for tenderness - have recently been commercialised by Queensland-based biotechnology company, Genetic Solutions.

CSIRO Media Release, 18/8/03.
