Administrator to run Mudgee abattoir 5 Sep 2003
An administrator, Steve Parbery of PPB, has been appointed to run Mudgee Regional Abattoir for at least the next six weeks while assessing its future. The abattoir is Mudgee's largest employer and contributes $50 million to the local economy. It has been hit hard by the drought and a fall in product supply, and called for urgent state and federal assistance in August, asking for $2.5 million in long-term aid. Mudgee Shire Council is providing up to $600,000 in emergency interim funding to keep the abattoir open.
Mudgee is one of several NSW abattoirs to come to grief over the past 12 months. Those in Orange and Forbes have closed, while Dubbo's is operating under reduced production.
Established in 1965, Mudgee Regional Abattoir employs 254 people, with another 200 employed by operators who buy stock for slaughter. The abattoir processes cattle, sheep, goats and deer and produces almost 50,000 tonnes of meat per year. It is an export-registered plant and licensed to produce meat for most overseas countries.
