Race against time for live sheep shipment 10 Sep 2003
Talks on a new destination in the Middle East for the 57,000 live sheep on board the MV Cormo Express have fallen through. Discussions with a potential new market, under way for several days, have stalled because due to political sensitivities; no veterinary or disease issues were involved. The issue was getting the country to accept a shipment that had been rejected elsewhere in the region.
It's understood that some of the sheep have died, but Livecorp says this is to be expected due to the amount of time they've been on board. New supplies of water and fodder have been taken on, but Livecorp said the sheep must get off the ship as soon as possible.
Livecorp is working with the exporter to find another market, with at least two other options being investigated.
Australian and Saudi officials are working on a new set of guidelines so that the live trade can resume.
