PM 'should save sheep'
16 Sep 2003

The RSPCA and Federal Opposition say the Prime Minister should step in to save the shipment of over 50,000 sheep stranded in the Middle East. Six per cent, or 3,400 sheep, have now died as temperatures over 40c decimate the stock.

Originally destined for Saudi Arabia, the sheep were rejected on health grounds, then offered to another country but also rejected there. They are now being offered free to any taker but as yet no country has come forward to take them.

While the Federal Agriculture Minister, Warren Truss, maintains everything possible is being done to resolve the situation, the RSPCA said it's a "debacle" and the Federal Opposition said it is a catastrophe for the live trade industry.

The Government and LiveCorp are working with the Saudi importer to find another destination for the sheep. Although LiveCorp does not have any legal responsibility for them, a spokeswoman said it has an ethical obligation to the animals.

Herald Sun, 16/9/03, page 14.
