Senate demands sheep death toll
18 Sep 2003

The Australian Senate has demanded that the Agriculture Minister provide the death toll of the shipment of sheep stranded in the Middle East by 3pm on September 18. Mr Truss said about 1,000 had died already but he did not know the precise figure.

The Senate also demanded to know which ports had been approached since the rejection at Jeddah, as well as which had agreed to accept the sheep and at what price.

The motion, moved by Democrats' leader Andrew Bartlett, also asked that the Government enforce minimum animal welfare standards in the live export trade and increase support for the chilled and frozen meat export trade.
