MLA assurance program is ready to go 8 Oct 2003
Meat and Livestock Australia hopes to begin its Livestock Production Assurance program in March 2004. To start with, farmers will be sent a manual setting out what records need to be kept for compliance. Ten new National Vendor Declaration forms will be included, as well as a legal document that farmers will need to sign to become fully LPA-accredited. This will cover issues such as farmers agreeing to random audits of their livestock records.
Sample packages have already been sent out in each state to selected producers for review and feedback, so that any problems can be addressed prior to the national launch.
If the NVD funding proposal is adopted, farmers would have to apply and pay for more copies once the initial 10 free forms have been used. This should not be a concern, however, as 50 per cent of producers use fewer than 10 forms a year.
The NVD booklets are also being redesigned to incorporate a weigh bill. They will be sent out with property details and PIC or tail-tag numbers already printed on the forms.
