Killing sheep at sea not in Howard's plan
10 Oct 2003

The Prime Minister said on October 9 that the Government does not intend to slaughter the 50,000-plus sheep on board the MV Cormo Express at sea, but remains committed to bringing them back to Australia. The sheep have now been rejected by 27 countries, with Agriculture Minister, Warren Truss, struggling to find a buyer. The ship is taking on feed in Kuwait and will be ready to sail either today or tomorrow.

Mr Truss has confirmed, however - contrary to the Prime Minister's statement - that slaughtering the sheep at sea is still an option. Three groups of Government officials are working on trying to find a solution: one on trying to find a Middle East destination, one planning the return of the sheep to Australia, and one on ways to slaughter the sheep at sea.

The Age, 10/10/03.
