Wool growers may demand compo if Cormo comes home 14 Oct 2003
Australian wool growers could sue the Federal Government if the sheep stranded on board the MV Cormo Express are brought back home. WoolProducers says an independent veterinary report states there's a high risk of the Australian livestock trade being exposed to insect-borne diseases. WoolProducers' president Simon Campbell said farmers would have no qualms about demanding compensation if a disease is introduced or if overseas markets banned Australian produce as a result of this matter.
The current Government plan is to ship the sheep back to WA where they would be transported to an abattoir, after first being held on Cocos Islands for further veterinary inspections. But Mr Campbell said there are no circumstances under which it would be safe to bring the sheep back to the Australian mainland. The independent vet's report found there was a high risk of the sheep contracting sheep pox, screw worm fly, or foot-and-mouth disease.
