Free-range pork producers taste success 28 Oct 2003
Jack and Miriam Neilson's free-range Berkshire pork has proved a hit with consumers. The Neilsons market a range of natural pork products from their northern NSW farm under the Pasture Perfect Produce brand. They also supply weaners for finishing for the Japanese market, where the marbled red pork is in big demand.
The Neilsons have found a growing niche market for their Berkshire pork since branching into free-range pig farming two years ago. The couple moved from a family bullock-fattening property at Banana in Central Queensland to the property at Winston, near the Copeton Dam, west of Inverell. They have combined 60 breeding sows and cattle in a holistic farming enterprise.
Mr Neilson said the DNA-tested pedigree Berkshires were selected for their ability to handle outdoor living conditions and their quality natural pork. They are moved around the property, grazing small areas behind electric fencing, with transportable shelter, watering and grain-feeding facilities. Mr Neilson says that regular moving breaks parasite breeding cycles.
The Neilsons will sell a range of pork cuts, including their nitrate-free hams and sausages, at the Farm and Food Expo, to be held at Indooroopilly on the weekend of November 15-16, 2003.
