Saudi sheep deal never signed 4 Nov 2003
On November 3 it was revealed that Australia had never signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia over live sheep shipments - although Saudi Arabia did. The live animal trade with the Saudis was resumed in 2000 after a break of 10 years.
Mike Taylor, secretary of the federal Agriculture Department told a Senates estimates committee yesterday that a formal agreement had not been executed by both countries. He said that in hindsight, it would have been prudent to have such an agreement in place. The MV Cormo Express saga probably would not have occurred had this been the case. An agreement was drawn up, but was not signed, did not contain a dispute resolution clause and did not agree on a level of scabby mouth disease.
