Vic farmers take bull by horns 12 Nov 2003
Livestock producers are threatening to boycott Victorian saleyards in protest against a $2-a-head fee by stock agents to scan store cattle from January 1, 2004. The Victorian Farmers' Federation is at loggerheads with agents and saleyard operators, but they have refused to back down from claims that at least $2 a head is needed from buyers to help cover the cost of the mandatory National Livestock Identification Scheme.
Simon Ramsay, the VFF's livestock president, has contacted all major stock agent companies, criticising any moves to collect the fees from cattle buyers. There's no evidence that a saleyard incurs additional costs when reading NLIS tags, Mr Ramsay said. If the stock agents insist on going down that track, the VFF will be urging producers to sell stock through other means.
