Sheep feed contamination result due 24 Nov 2003
The 70,000 sheep destined for the Middle East and allegedly fed shredded ham last week are still awaiting a quarantine export licence. The Federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry said it would not issue an export permit until the investigation into the incident by police and the Victorian Government has been completed.
Last week, animal rights activists claimed they had put pig meat into the water and feed of the sheep, which were about to be loaded onto the live export carrier Al Shuwaikh for a 14-day voyage to Kuwait. A man was arrested over the incident.
The investigation may be completed by the middle of this week. A department spokesman said the importer may or may not accept the sheep. If not, an alternative market will have to be found overseas or in Australia. It's unlikely the sheep ingested any of the pig meat however, he said. Sheep are conservative in their choice of feed and indications were that they had eaten around the contamination.
