Sheep delay cost mounts 26 Nov 2003
The delayed export of 70,000 sheep, due to be loaded on the al-Shuwaikh on November 20, is costing more than $50,000 a day while authorities investigate claims of contamination by animal activists. Australian Quarantine Inspection Service officers have refused to issue an export licence and Deputy Prime Minister, John Anderson, said on November 25 the shipment should not proceed without Kuwait guaranteeing to accept them.
Kobo Feedlot is looking after 30,000 of the sheep. Owner Phillip King said his company and the importer are facing costs of $18,000 to $19,000 a day to feed and care for the sheep. Another feedlot owner, David Peddie, has 40,000 of the sheep and said it's costing about $35,000 a day, for feed, staff, operational expenses and extra security.
