Plight of Portland sheep in the balance 27 Nov 2003
The plight of 70,000 sheep allegedly fed pork is increasingly uncertain, with growing fears they may be rejected by Kuwait. The Agriculture Department revealed it's receiving conflicting advice as to whether Kuwait will accept the live shipment. A spokesman warned that Australia could face another Cormo Express disaster if it sent the sheep to the Middle East.
The head of quarantine said the sheep would not be sent on their way until there's a commitment from Kuwait to accept them. He said he'd had advice that the animals have not been damaged by way of religious perception by being fed ham, and equally contrary advice saying exactly the opposite.
National Farmers' Federation president Peter Corish has labelled those responsible for the alleged incident as "bio-terrorists". Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson described the incident as a "nasty act", and "absolutely outrageous and disgusting".
Animal Liberation has indicated it may seek an injunction against the export of the sheep to ensure there's no repeat of the Cormo Express debacle.
