Funds to fight bio-terrorism 28 Nov 2003
Moves are underway to activate the Australian Farmers' Fighting Fund to initiate a class action against the animal liberation activists who sabotaged the Portland live sheep shipment last week. Following a crisis meeting in WA on Monday November 24 of WAFarmers and the live export industry, PGA said it would put the fighting funds proposal to the NFF conference this week. Fighting fund chairman Ian McLachlan has indicated that funds would be available to support the industry in this kind of situation.
PGA president Barry Court said security is being tightened at WA feedlots. The Portland incident is threatening to cause a backlog of stock available for export and wether prices have decreased by up to $10 a head in the past two months. Farmers and industry sectors relying on the livestock export for a living are angry and want some action taken.
