Sheep disease detected
2 Dec 2003

A Western Australian farm has been quarantined after abattoir workers found several sheep suffering from Ovine Johne's Disease. The WA Department of Agriculture is investigating the outbreak after notification from the abattoir and a pathology test, which confirmed the sheep had OJD. The sheep were traced to a particular property, which has been quarantined and assigned a status of suspect.

Western Australia is the only Australian state recognised under national regulations as being a "Free Zone" for Johne's disease. While some cases can occur in a Free Zone, WA would retain this status as long as the cases are eradicated. Over the past four years there have two cases in goats and one in sheep.

Any farmer whose sheep show unexplained signs of wasting or chronic scouring, followed by death, should contact his vet.
