Cattle, sheep duffing rates fall in Vic 10 Dec 2003
Cattle, sheep and horse duffing has fallen in Victoria by 26 per cent in the past three years, according to a survey undertaken by the Victorian Livestock Working Party. It's estimated livestock theft costs around $50 million a year and affects one in 12 farmers.
State Agriculture Minister Bob Cameron said the Working Party, which was established to combat the problem, had developed several initiatives which had led to the decline in theft, including a police training program in combating farm crime. Crime Stoppers also ran a campaign encouraging people to report livestock theft.
The National Livestock Identification Scheme will be fully operational in Victoria by January 2004, but Mr Cameron said NLIS can't work in isolation - it's crucial that livestock thefts are reported to police. He said the new measures are also turning around the long-held perception that little can be done to recover stolen livestock.
