Live trade legal push 10 Dec 2003
Livestock producers are preparing to protect themselves against any future action by animal welfare activists by seeking legal advice on how to prevent such action and claim damages. The move is likely to look at options such as the use of injunctions against protesters and suing for compensation following economic losses. The advice may form a base for an approach to the Australian Farmers' Fighting Fund for help in waging future legal battles.
The Victorian Farmers' Federation, the Western Australian Pastoralists' and Graziers' Association will make the application, with support from peak livestock bodies. Livecorp will also join the push for a legal strategy.
Samex Australian Meat Co Pty Ltd, owner of the sheep delayed recently at Portland due to feed sabotage, said the delay had cost the company more than $800,000. It is also looking at options for recouping some of the losses.
