Trade mission to promote Qld beef
5 Jan 2004

The Queensland Government will carry out a number of trade missions this year to promote the safety and quality of the state‘s beef. The promotions will target South-East Asia, the Middle East and South America. Primary Industries Minister Henry Palaszczuk said the missions were not about capitalising on the recent discovery of BSE in the US but about the quality of Queensland and Australian beef, and ensuring the targeted markets were not eroded. The fallout from the detection of BSE in the US will need to be closely monitored in 2004, Mr Palaszczuk said.

The South-East Asia and Middle East missions will leave in February, visiting Vietnam, Brunei, the Philippines, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Libya. The South American mission will depart in May and visit Argentina and Brazil.

Although Queensland beef exports have increased to almost $2 billion a year under the Beattie Government, Mr Palaszczuk said the industry cannot afford to be complacent.
