Sheep export self-regulation 'abused' 7 Jan 2004
The review into last year's Cormo Express debacle has told the Agriculture Minister that self-regulation in the live export industry has been abused and the industry needs to be re-regulated. The findings of the Keniry review, handed to Mr Truss on New Year's Eve, are virtually an indictment of industry self-regulation under LiveCorp.
The review recommends increased supervisory responsibilities be given to the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, as well as a new code of conduct for the industry. It's also believed to have recommended that live sheep exports be suspended in the northern summer, when temperatures in the Middle East are very high.
Veterinarians who examined the Cormo Express sheep when they finally landed in Eritrea in October 2003 found serious breaches of export requirements, including some failures to vaccinate against scabby mouth, and the presence of banned pregnant ewes and longhorn rams.
