Live exporters face tougher standards 9 Jan 2004
The Keniry report into the Cormo Express fiasco was released yesterday. Among its proposals are: the industry would be forced to comply with a national animal welfare code; the industry should pay for a Middle East quarantine facility to hold rejected animals; independent veterinarians to travel on longer voyages; two ports with high mortality rates, Portland and Adelaide, would be closed during the Middle East summer; AQIS would have direct control over the approval of export licences. The Keniry review also found that LiveCorp rarely punished breaches of animal welfare standards.
The report stated that the reasons for Saudi Arabia's rejection of the Cormo Express sheep were unclear, but a ban should remain on the live trade with that nation until the Australian Government receives written guarantees that future shipments will be accepted.
