VFF takes on export protesters 14 Jan 2004
The Victorian Farmers' Federation will seek a Federal Court injunction against animal welfare activists who try to sabotage live animal shipments. The VFF is waiting for the outcome of an application to the Australian Farmers' Fighting Fund for financial assistance for legal costs. The National Farmers' Federation will consider the application this week, which is expected to be granted.
The VFF will seek an injunction under Section 45D of the Trade Practices Act, which outlaws actions that interfere with legitimate business practices. This would mean protesters could be charged with contempt of court and face severe penalties in addition to those already applied under criminal laws. The move to seek a federal injunction means it can be applied across all major live export ports: Portland, Adelaide and Fremantle. The VFF plans to name many areas associated with live exports, including assembly depots, feedlots, ports, feed preparation and transport. It will also name organisations and individuals considered to be a potential threat to the live export trade.
